The first BOIC in year 2011

We had our recent BOIC at FRIM last 5-6th March. There were only 3 participants joining us this time as the other 3 that were supposed to join us had to pull out from BOIC due to some unforeseen circumstances.

Heng Kai conducted the first part of the BOIC with Introduction to Adventure Ministry with Adventure Games as demonstration. We had mixture of laughter with spur of knowledge of how to use the adventure games as a tool to build team dynamics and to evangelise. It's so much fun to see all of us running around like kids when we played "Have you ever" and the "Knight and Bandit". We continued to play the games up to lunch time.

After lunch, Justin and Tamie took Jackson, Pui Fun and Connie (the participants) for mountain biking course around FRIM. They stopped by the waterfall before coming back to Kem Perah. During the debrief session, one of them mentioned that the mountain biking course reminded her that it's like life routes. There will be a smooth route that easy for you to travel by and there will route that tougher to travel. If you're not careful, you're probably trip and fall. If you did not hold on, you probably won’t get to see the end of the route. I couldn’t really recall the whole of detail of her words; it's more of my paraphrase.

Then, done with the mountain biking, Alice and Ding conducted the Rope Course session. The rope course session required them to climb the tree using the arborist rope up to the branch the rope is looped on. All three participants did the challenge gracefully. Though Connie did not it to the high point, but her determination made her to climb more than half of the way to the highest point! A small step that you can not underestimate!

At night, we took each one of them for a nigh walk and solo hour. Alice asked them to contemplate on Luke 7:36-50. She asked us to ponder upon a few questions during our solo hour: our life before and after receiving Christ and how we have loved God (more because we realised of our sins or less?). Each one of us, including the instructors has an encounter with God in our own personal way. Some hear that God have convicted and confirmed their calling in the ministry they served in, some have experience God' faithfulness and protection, some whereby God spoken of His goodness and opened their eyes. Regardless of the fear they faced (to be in the dark alone for an hour) and none of the participants wanted to go thru solo hour again, we thank God for His protection and His faithfulness during that precious hour.

They went off to go for orienteering on the next day after breakfast. Though they took quite some time to find the entire marker but in the end they did completed the task. Kudos to all!

As for the instructors, we felt that we bonded more during the BOIC. In fact Alice mentioned that this BOIC is the most relax program that she done (despite the fact that she hasn't been to one). We may not have a big number of participants but seeing how things unfolded, we believe it is just right as how God wanted it to be. We had fun together, we learn together and most of all we grow together.

MAPs help me to reflect on my past life through the contact with nature during the activities. The Ipoh Boys’ Brigade programme at Harvest Haven on 31 July was a success. Many thanks to all instructors from KL and Penang and never forget to give thanks to our God as he has answered to our prayer for good weather (cloudy till lunch time and heavy rain before dinner time).

Due to the earlier rainfall, the night orienteering activity was more pleasant. Some of the markers were quite difficult to find but overall everyone had fun. Most importantly, the programme ended with 1 youth accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord & Saviour.

Overall, the instructors were encouraged to continue to serve the Lord in MAPs ministry as we see the Lord touched the hearts of the participants. There was good team work among Penang & KL Mappers. Bravo, guys!

That was a wonderful Saturday to serve in MAPs again. The activities that we conducted are adventure games and rope course. This time was a challenged task for each of us as all participants group age is just within 9 to 13 years old children which came from First BMJ Penang Boys’ Brigade Junior.

On the early morning, we started few adventure games activities like Name Game (Throw Ball Around), High Five Low Five, Asteroid, Finger Fight, People-2-People, Human Auction, Circle-In, Circle-Out, Zip-Zap + Viking + Jell-O, 3-to-3 Tag, Trolley and Tank. From the programs, children not only learned to have fun but they bonding with each other’s and they had been build up the group dynamic.

After lunch, we started conducted the Rope Course. All children’s had did their best in this program, their performance really out from our expectations. That’s 1 of the youngest girl in team shown us many profound spiritual lessons. She’s the most youngest and small size in the group, even she do not have enough physical strength to achieve the highest point of the tree but she shown us the spirit of never give up and keep trying on.

Of course, we also had a great time of debriefing and the participants came back with many profound spiritual lessons from the program.

1. Lord is creation God, he created the natural and so we could enjoyed the adventure activities in this natural places.

2. Lord is mighty, he gave power to each of us so that we could having the physical strength and confidence to complete the program.

3. Encourage is important to each others. In life may having a lots of obstacle but supporting from parents and friends are helpful for us to overcome it.

4. Pray when u need HIM; pray when u worship HIM.

5. Always give thanks to God!

At the end, we were closing the program by singing BB vesper together.

Through above program, it not only impact to children’s but also let us learned that even they are young, but they are strong. In this program we could see that all of them were encourage each others, all of them having the spirit of never give up which remind us that we shall keep it in mind in the journey of serving.

We are happy to be serving the youth of Malaysia for the past 5 years. The Lord has brought us through these 5 years with much joy and blessings. We want to continue to serve the youth of Malaysia even more and hence, embark on our 6 months free adventure programs. The free adventure programs will be similar to how we run programs as per our previous years. We are doing this because we do not want to hinder our youth from hearing the gospel because of finances. However, we will appreciate a love gift from you to help us defray our operational cost.

The free program however does not include cost charged by third party. We look forward to hear from you on how we can support you in reaching youths in Malaysia.

Basic Outdoor Instructor Course (BOIC)

MAPs (Ministering through Adventure Programmes) is a Christian Ministry that uses adventure activities as a tool to share the gospel of salvation of Jesus Christ to students and youths. We are an inter-denominational Christian organisation and partners with various Christian churches in our endeavour.

As part of our endeavour to introduce the concept of using outdoor adventure activities, to reach young people for Jesus, our effort includes running courses for Christians who are:

Born again
Have passion for the lives of students/youths and above 18 years old
Loves the outdoors and not afraid of the challenges that comes with it
Teachable and ready for a new experience

The lost Surabaya journals #1

Back in mid 2009, MAPs sent a team of 6 courageous instructors to Surabaya.

The Mission? Run an Evangelistic Outdoor Adventure Camp for 80 youths in Surabaya, codenamed STRONG (Surabaya Total Reach Out For the Next Generation).
The Venue? Lembah Kera, a.k.a - Monkey Valley
The Activities? Rock Climbing, Navigations, White Water Rafting and Pampers Pole.

Kepong Gospel Hall program @ Extreme Park!

Last saturday we had an exciting time with 13 youths from Kepong Gospel Hall. The day programme was held at Shah Alam Extreme Park. The activities were Adventure Games, Rock Climbing, Abseiling and Flying Fox. Indeed it brought out everyone's vertigo!

Overall it was an awesome program. The participants had a great time of fun, bonding and left with many profound lessons. Some of them were:

"Sometimes we feel like giving up, but with much encouragement and a little more push, we can do it!"

Elvin Wong (UTM-CLC Core) - Finally I can ride bicycle for the 1^st time in my life. Trying new stuff which many people are used to (cycling) is a new experience. Although was very down as I’m the only person who don’t know how to cycle but through the 2 days n 1 night of Adventure Camp, I finally can rejoice and be able to cycle together with other to and forth to our destination. Being on the bicycle for the 1^st time was scary as balancing the bike and pedaling the bike at the same time is a hard thing. However, after some practice and with confidence, I manage to have my 1^st bicycle experience.

Through this camp, there are few thing I’ve learn that can be applied to my current life. 1^st is “Trust”. Without trust, nothing can be done together. Trusting the people and trusting ourselves is important but trusting God is the most important in life’s journey. There are up’s n down’s like the road of mountain biking. When we are going downhill, we felt relieve and easy as we don’t have to put much effort into our biking but when going uphill, we sometimes tense to give up when we felt difficult to pedal our bike to the top of the hill. By trusting God and never give up when facing difficulties, we are actually pedalling uphill with the strength of God. Trust God when thing get though for He has a better pasture for us over the hill that we are climbing.

2^nd is “Faith”. By having faith, all things are possible. For impossible is mean in other word I M Possible. Through having faith in our instructor is important as having faith following God. Sometimes the activity or phases we went through might seem impossible or irrational yet by having faith in the instructor, we can accomplish what is seems impossible. Life’s journey always seems impossible yet if we have faith in God, all things will be slowly turning to possible.

3^rd is “Hope”. In life we always are searching for something. During the solo hour of the camp, I saw a hill lit up with light while all other surrounding is dark. I began to think that hope is like the small light in the dark. If we reach for the light, we will gain the light. Same as if we have hoped to gain something better, we surely will gain it. Although sometimes darkness might seem bigger than the small light yet if we reach out in faith, trust n hope, the light will be as big as the dark.

Going to this adventure camp is a fun experience for me and enjoyable. Learn a lot of it and gain some new insight of certain things in either spiritual or physical. A refreshing camp to awaken certain sleepiness inside. May God continue to bless this ministry and hope will can be a volunteer if the heart is ready someday.

Yi Wen (UTM-CLC Core) – the program remind me that I am not a perfect man but God always take care about me, give me strength when I am weak. After go through the program, I realize that I still have many physical and spiritual weaknesses. MAPs has done a good job to serve us in this 2 days 1 night program. Facilities and equipments 100%, safety 100%, program flow 100%, transport 100%, campsite 100%. I feel all this is a perfect plan. Thanks.

Jessalynn (UTM-CLC Core Leader) – setbacks seem like me a lot and kept pestering me again and again but it reminds me again that human is limited, only our God is perfect. Talk about MAPs for more than one year but when I personally experienced how people share gospel through adventure program, I was impressed. This is not just a simple sharing but can be something impact in people’s life. From simplest games to the most challenging activity, I can see the effectiveness of sharing gospel through adventure program. I had quite 9 years didn’t swim already and have a little phobia with deep water which I cannot see the bottom of the water but this time I was asked to jump into the water. Of course there is fear, but when I’m willing to take up another step of faith, God lets me enjoy the activity in water much and overcome my fear which I never tell anybody ;) overall, I have witness how God has used MAPs in reaching out the lost to Christ kingdom effectively and creatively. May God continue to bless this ministry so that MAPs can be other people’s blessing too.

White Water Rafting!

Last saturday MAPs organized a white water rafting trip in Sungai Kampar. There were 11 participants from SSMC (Sungai Way Subang Methodist Church). The river is a class 2/3 river which is a 15minute drive from the Gopeng Toll.

We had a great time of debriefing and the particpants came back with many profound spiritual lessons from the rafting trip. Some of it:

"Rafting is like life. Some times it is smooth, sometimes it is rough... but we learn to cope with it"

"The rocks in the river is like temptation we face. Some are big and others hidden. It is the hidden ones that trip us more!"

"We learned to work together as a team and to look out for each other. Save those who fall out...you never know when you need saving yourself!"

"We get stuck (in the rocks) and often times our efforts to break free seem futile. But after pushing and trying hard, eventually we can!"

Camp D’Adventure, JB Sept 2009 - Part 1

Yee Pooi San (MCCC Johor Staff) – it helps in discipleship as the 3 questions that we could use in small group. Connect the games with lesson behind will help non Christian not only listen to gospel but understand better. For personal learning, I learned to be patient in process and believe that behind every great accomplishment was once consider impossible.

Tan Boon Hwi (MCCC Johor Staff) – it really give me some principle in leading group after any games or event, and it can be use it to reach non Christian or in our discipleship group.

Wong Choong Voon (MCCC Johor Staff) – well, the whole program do help me to learn how to relate games with spiritual lesson. And the instructor life does teach me to use better ways to approach youth. I think that id the camping place is in a jungle with no engine sound will be better. I think overall I am satisfy with this camp, as there is a lot of feedback and sharing during the process.

Andrew Gilong (MCCC Sabah Staff) – every game is related or connected with personal life journey. It’s a good exposure because not only involve theory but also practical so both of it came to a balance when we played games or activities throughout the program. To relate with building movement, personally, I felt that the concept and the approach based on practical and adventure can train a person approach other people easier.

Razleh (MCCC Sabah Staff) – throughout the program, I am benefited in terms of skill and approaches on how to deliver bible’s message more effective, creative and practical.

Yip Foon Yee (UTM 2^nd year student) – it’s great because it helps me lot especially spiritually. This camp actually had motivated me to continue my service in church. It will better if the games are more challenging.

Surabaya Trip

12 - 19 August 2009

The Surabaya Team had an awesome time ministering to 80 youths in "Monkey Valley" (Lembah Kera). We went through an intense 3 days of rock climbing, rafting, trekking, caving and pole jumping (not dancing!). We slept in tents and bathed using aquarium water. We ate funky food and battled ants in our tents too!

Praise God for:

Salvations - There were around 20!!!
Strength - The instructors were skillful and were all in good health.
Safety - No deaths, broken bones or serious injuries!

Girl's Brigade Programme

MAPs (Ministering through Adventure Programmes) recently had a programme for 14 girls in the Girl's Brigade, 1st Petaling Jaya division at Bukit Cahaya, Shah Alam.

It was a two days, one night camp and the activities included Abseiling, Flying Fox, Kayaking, Orienteering and Adventure Games; along with Solo Hour in the forest at night.

The theme for the camp was Faith; both individual and corporate faith; Jason Khoo was the lead instructor, other instructors for this camp were Japheth, Bryant, Justin and Alice; and fellow girls brigade officer and ex-kl mapper, Elizabeth

Most of the girls were 12 year olds; and others ranged from 12-16 years of age. It was interesting to see the reactions of some of the girls when they first entered the camp site; most of them initially came in with the fear of bugs, height, monkeys and various other fears. Many of them loved reading, shopping and surfing the Internet, yes, they were surely in for a surprise camping in the forest ;)

We started off the saturday morning with adventure games to break the ice and learn more about each other, themselves, and working as a team. The girls really enjoyed themselves playing the tank, nights and bandits, zip-zap, big-brown-blue-blowpop and many more for a good hour and a half. Saturday afternoon included what most of the girls were most looking forward too (or fearing the most :p), abseiling and flying fox. In two groups, team A and team B prepared themselves by learning the 'trust fall', a vital step for most in learning to trust the rope, harness, equipment and instructors later on during the activity. After a briefing on the equipment and the activity itself, it was time to step over the ledge...

It was sheer joy to see ALL the girls go through both abseiling and flying fox, many breaking their fears of heights and learning heaps on Faith and Trust. During the debriefing sessions, testimonies and biblical examples were given out on how we can relate what we've learnt into daily living. A key lesson learnt from activities was taken from the life of Abraham; who by faith, stepped out of his comfort zone into a land God had promised him.

Saturday evening was probably the night most feared by the girls; the Solo Hour! Where each participant will spend an HOUR in the DARK forest alone (stationed about 20 feet from each other on a trail, with instructors placed in between of course, and with God). It was a new experience for ALL the girls; who managed to pull through the hour, praying, singing songs quietly, and having Faith that even God was there in the darkness and in the sounds of the forest. Some even learnt lessons from God about themselves or others. Lesson learnt : Individual Faith and learning to step out in the dark.

Sunday morning was filled with Kayaking activities. After a briefing on the Kayak, paddling and the life-vest, the girls were grouped in pairs and headed out into the lake. Learning to paddle out of the lilies into the open lake was a struggle for some (much screamings were heard in between, "caterpillers! bees! there's a lizzard in my Kayak!!") but everybody enjoyed themselves, and learnt to Kayak too. Various activies were done in the lake, including 'raft-up (in which all kayaks lined up next to each other), front-row stand-up, back-row stand-up, song-singing, and the most interesting challenge by Jason, "to get into the water and climb back into the kayak"; a challenge by choice, and many girls got out of their kayaks, swimming and struggling to get back into their kayaks, and managed to do it at the end, some helping their friends get back into their kayaks. Lesson learnt: teamwork, Corporate Faith and communicating.

Sunday afternoon was orienteering. The girls were given a map, a compass and were taught to use those equipment to find markers hidden around the forest. Divided into various teams and starting at different periods of time, the girls set off in groups of 3s or 4s, relying on their map and compass and each other to find their goals. Some markers took a longer time to find due to superb hiding skills by the instructors but at the end most were found. During debrief, most girls equated the map as being the Bible, and the compass as being the Holy Spirit in life; constantly leading us and guiding us in daily living, and learning to Trust and have Faith that God knows best.

The programme ended after orienteering and the girls headed back after an awesome outdoor experience; many experiencing such a camp for the first time. Personally it has even challenged myself to come out of my comfort zone, lead activities with confidence and improve my soft and hard skills. There's still so much to learn, for all of us...
